WSD Manager Explains Why Water Source Discovery Trumps Storage Expansion

Date:

Basseterre, St. Kitts (MoPIEUDT NEWS) – As the country continues to endure intermittent water shortages due to the impact of climate change, Cromwell Williams, Water Manager and Engineer at the St. Kitts Water Services Department (WSD) has clarified the institution’s decision to prioritize finding new sources of water over increasing water storage capacity.

Williams emphasized the importance of both measures and stated that the WSD has implemented both without exclusivity. However, he explained that under current conditions, priority should be given to finding new sources because the island’s daily demand for water stands at 6 million gallons per day – roughly one million gallons more than the quantity of water the WSD can provide from existing sources.

Williams proffered the explanation during his interview alongside Assistant Water Engineer, Landrith Mikhail Isaac, with SKNIS’ Ian Richards on InFocus on July 16, 2025, in which he shared additional insights about the WSD’s ongoing challenges and the innovative plans to tackle them.
