Basseterre, St. Kitts (MoPIEUDT NEWS) – Midmorning on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, residents in the parish of St. Peter brimmed with pride as they gathered to witness a landmark moment — the official opening of the rehabilitated St. Peters Main Road and F.T. Williams Highway East. The ceremony marked the culmination of a long-awaited infrastructure project that has significantly improved access, safety, and connectivity for motorists and residents alike.

The project, which represents a major investment in the island’s transportation network, was executed at a cost of $31.3 million. Managed by the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Energy & Utilities, and Domestic Transport through its Public Works Department, with the assistance of contracting company, Rock and Dirt Ltd., the rehabilitation works were designed to enhance road durability, improve drainage systems, and ease traffic congestion along the heavily travelled route connecting St. Peters to Basseterre and the surrounding communities.
In his address, the Minister of Public Infrastructure, Hon. Konris Maynard, emphasized that the St. Peters Main Road and F.T. Williams Highway East rehabilitation is part of a broader vision to improve public infrastructure across St. Kitts and Nevis.
“We recognized that the St. Peter’s Main Road and the F.T. Williams East Road were critical infrastructural arteries — a vital link to one of the fastest developing areas in St. Kitts. And yet, for far too long, these roads were neglected — ignored — a painful reminder of what happens when progress is left behind for politics.

“We saw potential, not neglect.
We saw possibility, not excuses.
And we said — no more.
No more delay. No more shame.
It was time to build, Just Build — and build with purpose.”-Hon. Konris Maynard
Senior Engineer at the Public Works Department, La Reine Gumbs, expressed satisfaction with the project’s successful completion. She noted that despite a 102-day extension, the works were executed on budget and to the highest standards of quality.

“From a project management standpoint, the rehabilitation works were executed with a strong focus on efficiency, safety, and cost control. The project was completed within its approved budget of EC$31.3 million even with the accommodation of several important variation works which includes the upgrade at the Shadwell Roundabout, turning lanes at the Kayan jet Terminal and improvements which are still to be carried out along the upper section of Taylors Road.
“While the project experienced a necessary extension of 102 days to ensure quality and safety, it was completed under strict supervision and achieved zero lost-time safety incidents, a testament to the professionalism of our engineers, supervisors, and workforce.”
The project represents a major achievement for the Public Works Department, a source of pride for the people of St. Peters, and a symbol of progress and development for the nation.
