Basseterre, St. Kitts (MoPIEUDT NEWS) – On Tuesday, March 4, 2025, the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Energy, Utilities, and Domestic Transport commissioned a secondary crushing plant, a screening plant, and a Rokbak truck to solidify its commitment to modernizing the quarry.

In his opening remarks, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Darryl Lloyd, underscored the importance of the quarry’s operations in developing the local construction sector.

“Aggregates are the lifeblood of the construction sector, and the quarry division is the largest provider of such within the federation.”

Mr. Lloyd recalled that the Ministry procured a primary crushing plant to improve the efficiency of its operations in 2024. The Ministry also procured the matching secondary crusher and screening plants to increase output further. The secondary plant has a capacity of 250 tons per hour and can produce aggregates of different sizes for local construction projects.

“The Power Screening Plant has the properties to screen out the correct sizes of the aggregates to suit the industry or activity. This plant was chosen because it matches the secondary crushing plant.”

Highlighting the significant investment in the quarry, Permanent Secretary Lloyd also stated that such an investment could enable the quarry to sustain itself financially.

“Although the (Quarry) Division falls under the structure and management of the regular civil service, it is a revenue-generating entity which is quite capable of sustaining itself through funds generated from sales, once properly outfitted with equipment.”
